I've been asked why I still identify myself as a Malay when I'm no longer Muslim. Knowing the difference between race and ethnicity makes this whole question moot. I'm biologically Malay. Both my parents are Malays although from a different heritage and ancestral root.
I have grown up practising and learning Malay culture. So to tell me that I can no longer identify myself as Malay just because I renounced my religion, doesn't make any sense. Nor does it have any justification. Before the rise of Islam in the region, Malays are known to be animists, Buddhists and Hindus. No one told them they cease to be Malay when they embraced Islam.
And so here I am, co-existing, with a nation of multicultural and multireligious society. I'm not here to proselytise anyone. I'm here to say we exist. I'm a minority in a minority group. What I seek isn't to convert anyone or lead them astray. But I seek for acceptance and by doing my part as a responsible citizens of Singapore and contributing positively to this nation, my religious affiliation should not make me any lesser of a Malay.
I would touch on religion as little as I can because that's not my focus so I prefer my discussions here to be focused on how the Malay community can overcome it's difficulties in its myriad aspects of community living.
I hope to be able to bring discussion that would uplift the community in the various issues that we are facing and bring about a change in mentality on how we evolve in this fast moving world we are in now. Cheers.
