Today is Mother’s Day.
Over breakfast this morning, the conversation somehow drifted toward the commercialization of Mother’s Day. And honestly, I do agree, every day can be Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, or a day to appreciate the people we love.
But somehow… I still wanted to write something about it.
A few months ago, I was in the process of winding up my company in Malaysia.
Movers were helping clear things out when one of the supervisors approached me and said:
“Your two sons said, ‘My mother wants to talk to you.’”
For a brief moment, I just stood there.
"My mother"
And suddenly, images came rushing into my mind — the two boys who had been under my care all these years. One now in his early twenties, the other still nineteen.
The lady looked at me again, probably wondering why I had gone so quiet, and asked:
“They are your sons, right?”
And I replied:
“Yes… they are.”
I was unexpectedly touched.
To hear myself being referred to as their mother so naturally… it stayed with me long after that moment passed.
So today, I want to honour all mothers out there not only those connected by blood, but also those who nurture, protect, guide, sacrifice, and stand quietly behind the people they love.
Happy Mother’s Day.
